Parking area in front of Muizenberg Civic Centre closed to allow beachfront upgrade

The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront is well under way. The City of Cape Town wants to inform the public that the parking area on the beach side, in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre, will be closed as from tomorrow, 19 March 2025, until mid-2025 to facilitate construction work to optimise the layout of the parking in the area. This is in addition to the informal parking area on the western side of Surfer’s Corner, next to the railway line, which has been closed to the public since last month.
The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront entails major upgrades to public amenities and replacing the aged seawalls. The project is being implemented in phases over a two-year period. The first phase commenced last month on the western side of Surfer’s Corner, next to the railway line where the informal gravel parking area has been closed to the public to allow for the relocation of underground services and so forth.
Residents and visitors must please note that the parking area on the beach side of the Muizenberg Civic Centre will be closed as from Wednesday, 19 March 2025, until mid-2025
Finding parking at the beachfront will be a challenge on busy days, given that the informal parking area on the western side of Surfer’s Corner is also closed to the public
Traffic flow to and from the beachfront will be impacted, however, all roads remain open
The beach will remain open and accessible at all times
Excavations of over two meters deep are currently taking place at the gravel parking area next to the railway line to allow for the installation of new underground services.
Next, is the construction of the first section of the sloped revetment or seawall, starting at the St James Walkway. The new revetment is a key element of the upgrade, designed by coastal engineering experts to protect the beachfront and underground services from future impacts of climate change, such as coastal erosion, increased wave action due to sea level rise, and more frequent storm surges.
The next community liaison meeting for the Muizenberg Beachfront Refurbishment Project is taking place next month.
